February, 2012 Blog - Teaching Must be a Subversive Activity

Posted on February 13, 2012 at 4:00pm 0 Comments

In deciding what to write for the February blog, I was scanning through some past issues of the National Council for the Social Studies’ professional journal, Social Education. I came across an article title that caught my eye from January/February 2009 entitled “Teaching Social Studies as a Subversive Activity” (January/February, 2009, p. 40-42) and I thought, “Hmm…sounds interesting.”

The article, written by Charles L. Mitsakos (recently retired professor of…

December, 2011 Blog - Revisiting the Call for 21st Century Skills

In last May’s TC blog, I wrote about what 21st Century Education needs to look like for all students—college bound and those working in the trades—to succeed and be competitive in a global world. Over the summer I read an article that speaks to the challenges in meeting this goal. The article is “21st Century Skills: The Challenges Ahead, written by Andrew…

May, 2011 Blog - 21st Century Education

Posted on May 13, 2011 at 2:30pm 0 Comments

We hear a lot about how the working environment of the 21st century will be very different from that of the 20th century. Constantly we hear of the need to prepare students for a “brave new world.” Education experts extol the virtues of technology and how schools and teachers need to modernize in order to keep up with their students and prepare them for careers in an interconnected world. Pundits and politicians (it’s getting harder and harder to tell the difference…

April, 2011 Blog - Active Learning in Higher Education

Posted on April 6, 2011 at 8:30pm 0 Comments

For those who may be working on an advanced degree, you might be aware of how colleges and universities are implementing active learning strategies into their instruction. But for those of us who finished our Masters degrees “back in the day” you might be amazed at how extensively many colleges and universities have embraced the methodology and in departments other than education. To be sure, the majority of classes in higher education still rely heavily on the one-way lecture method to…

Thanks for your comment. I just sent Black Gold via YouSendIt. The Quota lesson format may not be useful, let me know. Thanks!

Hi,
I posted a question on the forum but maybe you can help me. I read in my "See the USA" lesson book, I read that there was a list of state websites on Teacher Interact. Do you know where this is?

I am having difficulty understanding the directions in Interact "Discovery" Unit. I have had to make modifications because my students are pulled in small groups. We have sailed and landed in the New World, but I'm not really sure what to do now. I have read and reread the directions...please help.

Specifically, what to do when we "land" in the New World and how to fill out the Daily Labor and Wealth Chart. Thanks for any help.

Good afternoon,

I am just finishing up my first year teaching G&T in Rutherford, NJ. I used your See the USA simulation this year and really enjoyed it. I'd like to incorporate the Challenge Math Projects simulation next year. I have one small issue. I found the folder from the last teacher, but apparently it is only the copies for the students. It looks like it may be missing teacher directions. I've scoured my class room but I can't seem to find the original binder. I don't think we have money in the budget to replace the whole thing. Would it be possible to get the teacher's portion of this simulation? I thought I could wing it, but looking at the bookshelf challenge from the sample, I noticed that there is info I would definitely need! I am purchasing another simulation (Galaxy) from your company next year, and we already have the See the USA, Poetry, House Building and Challenge Math simulations... so we are obviously committed to your products! Thanks!!!
