I did the See the USA Interact with my sixth grade students. The science teacher and I collaborated on this and we added a few things that I am excited to share. If there is a way for me to share some of the electronic parts of the project, I would love to. I do have photos of the student work that I can add here as well.
We followed the plan of the travel days, the budget and the research but we wanted to add technology into the project as much as possible. We had the cartographer use Google Maps calculate distance and plot points of interest. Students were required to chose a cultural or physical landmark to research, write and 30 to 50 word description, and add an image or video to Google Maps. The travel teams also wrote a blog about their jobs and then what they learned about the state they were traveling through.
Science was learning about weathering an erosion during the project, so students would add tables to their blogs discussing weathering and erosion about each of the states they traveled through.
This project was great for the students and I. We all learned so much about the United States and about ourselves as learners. The overall product was amazing and since it was my first attempt at this, I can't wait to try it again and see what happens next time. In fact, my daughter will be in sixth grade in two years and she is already looking forward to this project!
